Responsibility & Sustainability
All of our polymer charms are hand-crafted, hand-painted and sealed, and the jewelry is assembled by hand at my artist studio in Los Angeles, California.
The core values of Sweet Marcel include environmentalism and humanitarianism. Our goal is to create as little harm as possible, in the production and distribution of our products. We do so by sourcing our materials and components from wholesalers that share our transparent, ethical, environmental, and humanitarian values, whenever possible.
Our supplier for our gold-filled findings and components is Rio Grande, who are committed to the London Bullion Market Association standard for their precious metals. They also provide transparency for the sourcing of their gemstones, to ensure that they are ethically sourced. During their production process, where they prepare gems to become the semi-precious stones that you can find on Sweet Marcel Jewelry, they only work with facilities that align with the Responsible Jewellery Council.
Our packaging and shipping items are made in collaboration with brands that center the environment in the production of their products. We use environmentally friendly items from companies such as Rio Grande, No Issue, EcoEnclose and Sticker You. For our synthetic materials, such as polymer, acrylic paint, and polyurethane, Sweet Marcel sources from local and small suppliers, whenever possible.
Material Process
At Sweet Marcel, our jewelry is handcrafted using sterling silver and a unique material called silver clay. Silver clay is made of tiny silver particles mixed with a natural binder, giving it a soft, clay-like feel that can be shaped and sculpted by hand. After each piece is created, it’s fired in a kiln, where the binder burns away and the silver fuses into a solid piece of metal. Although the clay begins as sterling silver (.925), the firing process actually makes it slightly more pure, resulting in a beautiful .960 silver. This higher purity gives our pieces their bright, refined finish and makes them suitable to be hallmarked as both “sterling” and “.960.”
FAQ:
1. Is it “real silver”?
Yes, this is one of the most common questions customers have. It’s helpful to emphasize that once fired, silver clay becomes solid, high-purity silver and is just as durable and valuable as traditionally worked silver.
2. Is it durable?
Customers may be unfamiliar with the medium and worry it’s fragile. You can clarify that once fired, silver clay is real metal and strong enough for everyday wear with normal care.
3. Does it tarnish?
Because it’s high-purity silver, it behaves just like sterling or fine silver: it may naturally darken over time but can be easily polished.
